What is Diabetes?

Diabetes (full name:diabetes mellitus) is a disease where the body has trouble dealing with food. Normally the body turns food into sugar and distributes it throughout the body to the cells. This sugar is called glucose. To move the glucose from the blood stream to the cells the body need the help of insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas. The body then adjusts the supply of insulin according to the amount of glucose.
There are two major types of diabetes. They are; insulin-dependent-diabetes-mellitus or IDDM, and non-insulin-dependent-diabetes-mellitus or NIDDM.

Type 1 Diabetes
The first type of diabetes, IDDM usually occurs when people are under the age of 30. The person does not produce insulin and this type can be inherited. Illnes and stress can trigger this type of diabetes, even though it seems to appear suddenly. The signs that you may have IDDM are:
*frequent urination
*increased thirst
*increased hunger
*unexplained weight loss
*irritability
*weakness
*tiredness
*nausea
*vomiting

Type 2
The second type of diabetes, NIDDM, occurs usually when people are over 40. This type of diabetes is linked to obesity. For type 2 diabetes, the body produces insulin but may not pproduce the right amount. NIDDM mayt also be inherites. Some people with NIDDM may eventually stop producing insulin. NIDDM begins gradually and has all of the same symptoms of IDDM. It also has:
*skin, gum, and bladder infections that are hard to cure
*blurred vision
*tingling in hands and/or feet
*numbness in hands and/or feet
*itching
